Polar bear figure on 7th Street NW near Gallery Place

In September 2008 we made five homeless polar bear figures for Greenpeace in Washington, D.C.: life-size figures with polar bear heads and ragged clothing, one with a sign reading "S.O.S." and one with signs reading "Victim of Oil Addiction" and "Global Warming Refugee. Help a brother out?". We placed them on the Constitution Avenue median, on 7th Street NW near Gallery Place, on the National Mall, and in Columbia Heights at Irving and 14th Street by the Metro; the fifth stood in front of the U.S. Capitol for a three-day vigil before the Congressional vote on the offshore oil drilling moratorium. Greenpeace announced the project on 17 September 2008, when the National Snow and Ice Data Center reported that Arctic sea ice had reached its second lowest extent on record, to show polar bears losing the sea ice they depend on.
